20 Years Behind the Chair: What Experience Really Means in Hairdressing

After more than 20 years behind the chair, I’ve learned that great hair is rarely about chasing trends. It is about understanding proportion, texture, movement, and how a haircut or color will actually live on the person wearing it. Experience matters because it allows you to make better decisions before the first cut is made.

At David and Steven in Miami Beach, our approach is built around consistency, healthy hair, and work that feels polished without looking overdone. The goal is not to make every client look the same. It is to understand what suits the individual and create hair that continues to work weeks after the appointment.

Why Experience Matters

Hair changes constantly. Texture shifts, density changes, color history builds up, and the way someone wants to look evolves over time. Experience helps you recognize those changes quickly and adjust the approach instead of relying on the same formula every visit.

It also creates consistency. A successful appointment should not depend on luck. The cut, color, shape, and finish should all be considered together so the result looks intentional on day one and continues to make sense as the hair grows.

Healthy Hair Comes First

The best haircut or color only works when the hair itself is in good condition. That means paying attention to density, elasticity, previous chemical services, heat styling, and the amount of maintenance a client is realistically willing to do at home.

We would rather make a thoughtful adjustment than force a dramatic result that compromises the hair. Sometimes the most sophisticated choice is restraint: preserving length, improving shape, softening color, or making changes gradually so the hair stays strong and looks expensive.

Cut and Color Should Work Together

The strongest results happen when haircut and color are considered as one design rather than two separate services. Shape affects how color is seen, and color can either support or fight the movement of the haircut.

At David and Steven, that collaboration is built into the process. David focuses on color and I focus on cutting and styling, but the goal is the same: hair that feels balanced, flattering, and cohesive rather than overworked.

What Clients Should Expect

A good salon experience should feel personal, calm, and clear. That starts with listening carefully, understanding what is working and what is not, and being realistic about what the hair can support.

The goal is not simply to make the hair look good when you leave the studio. It should continue to feel right at home, fit naturally into your routine, and grow out in a way that still feels considered.

After more than 20 years behind the chair, that remains the standard: thoughtful decisions, healthy hair, and work that feels modern without trying too hard.
